I read that from Lewis’ Till We Have Faces and thought what a vivid image it was. To be water put away in utter darkness and stillness, completely useless, seemed like a terrible existence.
And then I got to thinking: Isn’t that like sanctification, except we’re a bunch of grapes. One by one, He squeezes the life out, until we are only water in a bottle, then puts away into His cellar. It’s dark and dusty; often we’re unable to see and at best only able to make out shadows and outlines. We feel useless in this moldy air. But all the while, God is making wine out of us, and one day, we’ll join Him in that celebration.
I can’t help but think that we’ve somehow gotten in over our heads. Now it’s no mystery to me why we’re sinking. I could go ahead and spoil it for you–but it never was about me, was it?
First, Czech TV is now broadcasting a reality show based on the lives of four primates at the Prague zoo. No doubt that these, our hairy progenitors, lead interesting lives, but has television sunk so low to interest people in the social conflicts between gorillas? Pehaps if we watch long enough, they’ll show us that at least they still remember where they came from.
Second, pirates attacked a cruise ship off the coast of Somalia the first week in November. This month. In my lifetime. Seriously, somebody needs to grow up and get over the “I’m 16 and mad at my dad” syndrome.
Third, news from Ireland: bury people with their cell phones. Hello! Surely they’ll need those in the afterlife. I’m glad some of us have finally come to our senses and remembered such an essential! Then again, I wouldn’t want to be haunted by some dead relative who keeps calling me up to chat. Maybe we should take the batteries out first.
