Island Time

This little guy sits above our fireplace. The rumor is he was made out of recycled aluminum (?) in Haiti. Undoubtedly this was made many years ago, but it made me think to mention This American Life’s broadcast Island Time. It raises some interesting points about relief and disaster and development and if there really is any hope. Before you listen, read this, which is one of the best articles I’ve read from a rock star.

Teach us to number our days

Down the street from my house is this wonderful cemetery. It’s quite large for a cemetery so near downtown, and I find it very peaceful and helpful to stop by from time to time. I ran by it today while listening to U2′s “Wake Up Dead Man.” In one of the lines, Bono expectantly asks Jesus, “Tell me, tell me the story, the one about eternity, and the way it’s all gonna be… Wake up, wake up Dead Man….” It’s a song worth listening to again, if you haven’t heard it in awhile. Cemeteries and this song are a reminder to live now, and to live for later.

Where I Sleep

Have I mentioned that I’m moving? This is what that looks like. Boxes, boxes, everywhere. A stray couch here and a pile of pictures there. This is what it’s like to move, work, and start new work all at the same time.

Tom’s of Virginia

As I’ve mentioned recently, I have moved and so have my tomato plants! I loaded them up this morning, uncertain as how to transport something filled with dirt, sans top, that can only be hung. As it stands, transpo on its side works, too. Here’s my little tomato/basil container, complete with a few flowerings already!

Where I Live

I just moved across town to Belmont– from what most people consider to be the ghetto to the up and coming YUPPIE neighborhood. Be that as it may, here I am and here I will stay. Today marks the first of a new effort in creativity. The idea is to develop my photography and write– at least a blurb– each day.
